Finding Your Own Footing
As someone who has been making movies, (professionally), for over half of my life, by this stage of the game, and has taught on the subject for decades, one of the main things that I have encountered in the whole and entire game of filmmaking is that many people desire to make a movie, many people critique a movie, a small number even make a movie, but very few ever devise their own unique and individual philosophy for filmmaking. They just mimic and create what was previously done by others.
This is very much the same with the martial arts, which I have been, (professionally), involved with for even longer than filmmaking, (most of my life). In the martial arts, I have observed how many people study the martial arts, some of these people are fierce supporters of their style or their teacher, some reach the rank of black belt, (or the equivalent level), a few even move onto the level of being certified as a teacher, but very few move beyond what they were taught onto the place of truly understanding the movement of the human form and realizing their own unique presentation of that movement and then passing it along to others.
Take a moment and think about your life. How much of your life is truly defined by you? You have to be honest with yourself while doing this. Truly, how much of your life is defined by your own enhanced unique and singular understanding of reality, compared to how much of who and what you are, what you believe, and what you do was actually taught to you by someone else?
The fact of all of our lives is, most people do not step beyond what they are taught to think, taught to believe, and instructed to do. They simply do as they are told. Sure, everyone has feelings and thoughts, ideas, loves, and hates about how their life operates and what they are doing. But truly, think about this—look at your own life; how much of who you are, what you do, how you do it was unique created solely by yourself?
Take a few moments. Really think this through.
So, this is the reality—this is the truth of the reality of most. People live a life taught to them and defined by someone else.
Okay… That’s a fact. Now what? Now that you know this fact, what are you going to do with it?
